Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough

A major in Environmental Studies focuses on the social context of and potential solutions to problems in the environment. We've designed our program to give you the knowledge and tools not just to understand environmental problems, but solve them. We’ve focused our courses into three categories to give you the specific skills needed to make a difference. You’ll start with the “foundation” category, the suite of courses that build a strong background in socioeconomics and environmental science, then move to “skills,” and “capstone and applications,” the stages when your courses will be embedded with frequent experiential, hands-on learning, through problem-solving case studies, team-based projects and individual research.

Throughout your learning, we place special emphasis on building the interdisciplinary problem-solving abilities needed to tackle environmental management issues. Our program includes the foundational knowledge you’d typically find in environmental studies programs, but we go further with a strong focus on the importance of building bridges among the various disciplines that intersect with environmental studies.

This program has received accreditation by the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada, in recognition of the extensive number of lab courses and numerous experiential learning opportunities available to our students.
