2024 GCSAN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Introduction

The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) Geography and City Studies Alumni Network (GCSAN) is currently accepting applications from UTSC Geography and City Studies alumni interested in joining the executive team. 
 
The UTSC GCSAN is committed to fostering a sense of community among alumni and equipping graduating students with the skills and knowledge to support the transition to postgraduate studies and/or career development.

Our vision is to partner with the University of Toronto Scarborough Alumni Association (UTSCAA), the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO), the Geography and City Studies Student’s Association (GCSA) and the Department of Human Geography to provide opportunities for alumni and graduate students to interact with each other in a friendly and safe environment.

By joining the GCSAN Executive Team, you would have an opportunity to get involved at UTSC in a few of the following ways:

  • Support University of Toronto Scarborough alumni events
  • Expand your personal and professional networks
  • Become a member of the UTSC Alumni Award Selection Team (one GSCAN rep serves on this committee each year)
  • Become an Advisory or Executive Member of UTSCAA (one GCSAN rep serves on the UTSCAA each year)
  • Participate in the UTSC Partners in Leadership Mentorship Program
  • Participate in GCSA Alumni Volunteer Opportunities

Please note that the positions are unpaid; members of the UTSC GCSAN serve as volunteers.

 

Positions Available for Executive Team Members

There are two (2) executive team member vacancies on the UTSC GCSAN:
 
Vice President of External Relations

The VP of External Relations is responsible for the following:

Administrative: reviewing and preparing emails based on your role.

Building Partnerships and implementing external relations strategies:  Building and maintaining relationships with alumni and university partners to enhance the visibility and reputation of the alumni network. Communicating with external stakeholders, including but not limited to UTSC, Department of Human Geography, DARO and GCSA.

Representing the alumni network: Serving as a spokesperson for the alumni network in internal and external meetings, events, and communications. Serves as a positive ambassador for UTSC.
Event planning: Planning and organizing events that engage alumni and promote the alumni network's objectives.

Communication: Overseeing and assisting with the development of external communications materials, including newsletters, event communications and social media content.
Monitoring trends: Monitoring trends and developments in external relations and alumni engagement to identify opportunities for the alumni network.
 
 
Vice President of Operations

The VP of Operations is responsible for the following:

Administrative: reviewing and preparing emails based on your role.

Logistical Organization: Researching and securing venues for GCSAN events (ie. coordinating with hosts and obtaining all information relevant to communicate to members, including price, way-finding and safety)

Meeting Management: Steering internal and external meetings, preparing agendas for internal meetings, minutes during the meetings and identifying action items at the conclusion of the meeting.

Information Management: Overseeing the management of Google Drive, including details of events. 
Representing the alumni network: Serving as a spokesperson for the alumni network in internal and external meetings, events, and communications. Serves as a positive ambassador for UTSC.

Event planning: Planning and organizing events that engage alumni and promote the alumni network's objectives.

Communication: Overseeing and assisting in the development of external communications materials, including newsletters, event communications and social media content.

Monitoring trends: Monitoring trends and developments in external relations and alumni engagement to identify opportunities for the alumni group.

Detailed information on GCSAN, members’ responsibilities, and the selection process is included below.

As part of the selection process, the GCSAN Executive Team will consider the knowledge, skills, and experience of each applicant, including for example:
Interest in supporting and strengthening UTSC’s alumni community

  • Experience or interest in event planning, networking, or alumni relations
  • Previous enrolment in a UTSC Geography and City Studies Program or course
  • Past or current involvement and/or contributions to UTSC
  • Experience participating at UTSC on other committees or Boards
  • Understanding of the objectives and priorities of UTSC as set out in the UTSC Strategic Plan: Inspiring Inclusive Excellence.
  • Availability to meet biweekly throughout the year for one-hour-long GCSAN meetings
  • Availability to attend GCSAN events, optional attendance at alumni events hosted by UTSC, GCSA and the Human Geography department (approximately 4 to 6 per year).
     

The successful applicants will be contacted via email to set up an interview with the GCSAN Executive team. Successful candidates will be invited to serve a one-year term.  Extensions to these positions beyond a year are possible based on performance but will be at the discretion of the GCSAN Executive Team.
