Math Mnemonics

It is important to remember that mnemonics are never a substitute for understanding math concepts, but can be an important tool for remembering math formulas or steps to solving an equation.

For instance, acronyms (words) and acrostics (phrases) are commonly used in math to remember the order of steps in solving an equation or as a cue to remember associated concepts. Below you will find a few examples of mnemonics used in math, but it is best to consider making acronyms specific to your course content.

Examples

“Lots of Work makes me Mad!”

Work = Mad

M = Mass

A = acceleration

D = distance

Gibb’s Free Energy Formula

“Good Honey Tastes Sweet”

Δ G = H – TΔ S

Inverse Matrices (DETMINSTRA)

1. calculate determinant  (DET)

2. for every entry find minors with the sign (MINS)

3. transpose obtained matrix (TRA)
