This method can be handwritten or typed and organizes information by using different bullet points and spacing to indicate main ideas/headings and supporting information.  In general, it will use headings, subheadings, points, and sub-points. The headings will help you to identify the important topics in the lecture.

Advantages

  • Very fast – Remember to use abbreviations & symbols!
  • Simple formatting
  • Good for clearly separated topics (i.e. science, math)
  • Good for students with strong verbal skills

Disadvantages

  • Can be difficult to review; may need to reorganize notes later
  • Difficult to demonstrate connections or comparisons between different topics (may not be best for humanities-based courses)

Example

Lecture 5: Operant Conditioning

Positive Reinforcement

  • Positive = get something
  • Reinforcement = increase freq. of behaviour
  • Kid sings -> singing praised -> kid sings more
  • ^ +R -> gets a good thing

Negative Reinforcement

  • Negative = lose something
  • Take medicine -> headache goes away -> continue taking medicine to prevent headache
  • ^ - R -> loses a bad thing

Positive Punishment

  • Punishment = decrease freq. of behaviour.
  • Kid cheats -> gets zero -> less likely to cheat
  • ^ + P -> gets a bad thing

Negative Punishment

  • Kid cheats -> loses game privileges-> less likely to cheat
  • ^ - P -> loses a good thing
