Heather Lynn Benson (HBSc 1998) has established a $40,000 scholarship fund for mature students.
“I thought it would be worthwhile,” says Benson, noting that there had been no scholarship funding specifically for mature students.
Benson first attended UTSC in 1968 but left before obtaining a degree. She returned in 1993 and earned an honours degree studying cognitive science and psychology. After graduating, she worked for two years as a research assistant to John Kennedy, UTSC professor of psychology. She now lives in Alberta with her husband, Alfred F. Benson.
The Heather Lynn Benson Scholarship in Biological Sciences and Psychology will be awarded to a mature student every year. Benson also bequeathed a planned gift to the University.
“Heather's support of our Leader to Leader program has allowed her to designate her giving to scholarships, experiential learning opportunities and research fellowships,” says Georgette Zinaty, executive director, development and alumni relations. “Such generosity enables us to truly enhance the student experience at UTSC. Support of our Leader to Leader program is the gift that keeps on giving—today's leaders helping nurture our leaders of tomorrow.”
