Student artists invited to design new Scarborough Charter logo

The Steering Committee of the Scarborough Charter is inviting eligible student artists & designers to participate in a design opportunity that will lead to the design of a logo that reflects the principles, commitments, and objectives of the Scarborough Charter and its goal of Black Flourishing in Canadian higher education and communities.

The logo will be used in both print and digital formats, including for print materials, event promotion, social media sites and on the Scarborough Charter website.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY

• Individual students or student design teams currently enrolled at a Scarborough Charter signatory institution.

PHASES AND TIMELINES

This opportunity has two phases:

Phase 1 (January 25th – February 24th, 2023): Acceptance of portfolio submissions showcasing skills associated with developing visual concepts and mock-ups. Candidates proceeding to phase 2 will be notified by March 10, 2023.

Phase 2 (March 20th – April 28th, 2023): Artists/designers/design team(s) selected to participate in Phase 2 will receive mentoring, from faculty members of OCAD University’s Solid Black Collective, to support development of their logo according to design specs.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR PHASE 1

  • Submit a link to your online portfolio of prior work (Note: This should ideally demonstrate skills associated with developing visual concepts and mock-ups)

  • Submit a statement of intent describing what the principles of the Scarborough Charter mean to you as it relates to your lived experience. Explain why you believe the Charter is necessary to enable Black Flourishing in Canadian higher education and communities.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

  • Deadline to submit is Monday, February 24, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. (EST)

Individuals/Teams selected for Phase 2 will be notified via email by March 10, 2023.

PHASE 2 ADJUDICATION AND AWARDS

A jury drawn from faculty and Black artists/designers associated with signatory institutions will evaluate submissions and determine recipients of awards as follows:

  • First place - $1,500

  • Second place - $750

  • Third place - $500

All Phase 2 participants will have the opportunity of having their submissions exhibited at a future national meeting of Scarborough Charter Inter-institutional Forum. They will also receive a certificate of recognition from the Scarborough Charter Secretariat.
