Professor Michael Schillaci (UTSC), along with two linguists and former U of T graduate student Dr. Sergi López-Torres, recently co-authored a paper titled, “Linguistic Clues to Kiowa-Tanoan Prehistory”, published in the Journal of the Southwest.

This paper is the culmination of eight years of research combining quantitative and historical linguistic analyses of lexical and phonological data with archaeological evidence to explore the prehistory of the Kiowa-Tanoan language family.

The results from their study both challenge and support previously well-accepted theories regarding the timing and location of the origin of several languages within the family.
