UTSC Severe Weather Guidelines

When severe weather causes the cancellation of classes or a full campus closure, updates will be communicated via the UTSC website, email, intranet, digital signs, the UTSC Twitter account (@UTSC) and the UTSC emergency information line at 416-287-7026.

In the event that classes are cancelled, all non-teaching operations are expected to continue.

In the event that a full campus closure is declared, all buildings will be locked and there will be no services available on campus other than essential services.

A decision on the status of morning classes will be announced by approximately 6:30 a.m. on the day in question. A decision on evening classes will be announced by approximately 4:15 p.m.

If classes are underway and weather conditions cause a campus-wide cancellation of classes, updates will be broadcast through the above channels as soon as possible. A decision on evening classes will follow by approximately 4:15 p.m.

During severe weather conditions, facilities such as the library and the athletic centre may alter their hours of operation depending on staff availability. Also, scheduled conferences and facility rentals by outside organizations may or may not go ahead as planned. Please contact these services and/or external event organizers to determine their plans.

When classes do occur during severe weather events, students who are able to do so should attend classes. However, instructors are expected to exercise sensitivity to safety issues when classes are held during severe weather. Students who cannot attend such classes should refer to the syllabus of each affected course to learn how the instructor or department handles non-attendance, late submissions and missed assignments. Related questions or concerns should be directed to the instructor or academic department. Most academic departments' phone numbers are available from their webpage or the campus directory, which is accessible from both the website and the intranet.

Supervisors of individual departments should discuss human resource polices related to severe weather events in advance with their staff.
