Jo (Jayeeta) Sharma is an Associate Professor in the Historical and Cultural Studies Department and a member of Graduate Departments of History. She is cross-appointed to the Department for the Study of Religion, and the Asian Institute. Her research examines food, mobilities, labour, family and gender in imperial and postcolonial spaces. She is the author of Empire’s Garden: Assam and the Making of India (Duke 2011), which examines tea plantations and labour migration in the British Empire. She is on the Editorial Board of Global Food History and the Editorial Collective for Radical History Review, and is editor of the Empires in Perspective book series at Routledge. She is interested in digital humanities particularly as a methodology that enables community engagement, public outreach, and global knowledge transfer. She teaches courses that focus on food, family, and oral histories, global commodity chains, culinary cultures and Global Asia cities.
