Biography

I’m a second year student in the co-op French program, doing a double minor in Psychology and English, hoping to become an elementary school teacher. I’ve always known that I wanted to go into teaching, but didn’t know what I wanted to teach until grade 12. My grade 12 French teacher called in a speaker to talk to us about the importance of bilingualism, especially when it comes to teaching, and that’s when I decided French was it. 

Biography

Alexa started studying at UTSC in 2019, double majoring in French and English. She fell in love with English early on her academic career, and took Advanced Placement English courses in high school. Though she didn’t take French immersion classes, Alexa was able to obtain a certificate at the DELF B1 level this past May. Studying English and French complement one another in more ways than Alexa had expected; in French, she’s able to use techniques taught in her English classes to analyze literature, and in English she’s able to apply her knowledge of language to identify parts of sentences. Alexa is very thankful for the small class sizes in the French and Linguistics Department in UTSC because she’s able to form strong relationships with her classmates and make life-long friends. After she graduates from UTSC, Alexa plans to work in the apply to a Masters program for Journalism – her bilingualism will grant her opportunities to travel around various parts of Canada in addition to French speaking countries worldwide.

Alana started her degree in 2015, double majoring in the two constant passions in her life. Continuing in theatre professionally was an obvious choice, but the decision to bring French along too seemed organic. She had an early introduction to learning the language thanks to her paternal grandfather, whose family hails from the French community in the Windsor/Détroit area. She had the privilege of going to a French immersion elementary school, then high school. It had become such a large part of her life that it only seemed natural to pursue learning the language, as well as immersing herself in different aspects of French culture which UTSC offers through it’s courses. Her two majors intersected more than she would have thought, and she was able to engage with those subjects while studying French plays and literature that would come up again in her studies of theatre history. After she graduates, she plans to work in the theatre industry all around the world – her bilingualism will grant her opportunities to potentially work in Canada and other French speaking countries in Europe and Africa. The French department at UTSC equipped her with the skills to be well-versed in conversational French, practical translation, and French culture and literature which will grant her the freedom to work anywhere, and to create and enjoy theatre and art in different cultures and communities worldwide. Biography

I’m a sophomore doing Specialist Linguistics Co-op at University of Toronto Scarborough. I’m interested in first and second language acquisition when I had LINA02 and would like to explore more in the future. I’m bilingual and can speak two languages that are Mandarin and English. My goal was to gain a more in-depth understanding of these two languages and be able to help others with language learning, and I found that I have always enjoying working with children when I started volunteering in a Child Care Center, and in recent year I have determined my ambition to be a foreign language teacher. I should also be very thankful to the some of the professors in the Centre of French and Linguistics, they gave me lots of useful suggestions and provided the support and encouragement to keep me going. After graduation, I plan to pursue continued education in Master of Teaching. Outside of my studies, I love playing the piano and travelling. I had a trip to Montreal last December and fell in love with the city. I also got the chance to learn some basic French words with the local, and I was actually thinking to learn French in my next semester.
