GGRC54H3: Human Geography Field trip (Tokyo, Japan)

In the 2019 Summer session we offered our field trip course GGRC54H3 to Tokyo, Japan with Professor André Sorensen. We look forward to offering GGRC54H3 again in the future.

Course Description:

This course is an in-depth study and comparison of urban geography, urban planning, and urban governance policies and issues in Tokyo and Toronto. The course includes a one-week field trip to Tokyo July 27-August 3, and responsibility for hosting a group of city studies students from Japan for a week in Toronto, July 13-20.

The course will include 9 weekly classes before the field exchanges start, participation in hosting our guests in Toronto, and 1 week in Tokyo. Students will prepare a research report and field seminar on an aspect of Toronto governance policies and issues, and a field report on the trip to Tokyo. One class in Toronto will include a mandatory Study Abroad training session.


Enrolment and Application Guidelines:

This is a limited enrolment course with up to 15 places. Students must request the course on ACORN. Your status will be INT until the admission decisions have been made.

Each student who would like to enrol in the course must also submit an online application  which includes a 300-word (maximum) explanation of why they want to take the course.

NOTE: If the course is oversubscribed, students will be selected based on GPA and by their application letter.

Funding:

The cost of the field-trip will be less than but up to $3,000.00 including return airfare, hostel, meals, domestic travel (precise amount will depend on exchange rates, and the cost of flights).

Instructions: Please login via intranet to apply to the fund. Once you login on intranet, on the left side of the webpage, under the “Additional Tools” heading please click on “Student Development Opportunities Fund”. And then select the Global Learning Fund Link.

The application form includes the following:

  • Letter of intent (in your letter please include your interest in the program, the scope of the program, financial need for costs associated to the program, how you will share your experience with the UTSC community- for this please state you will be hosting a group of city studies students from Japan for a week in Toronto, July 13-20 and be overseeing city related activities as part of the exchange).
  • Professor recommendation: please upload this application guidline document to the section
  • Transcript: please download your transcript from Degree Explorer (PDF format)
  • Revenue section: please state any source of income you have or any financial assistance you receive (i.e. OSAP)
