UofT Instagram photoWe asked for your stories for #AsianHeritageMonth, and we got them! We received a suggestion to feature Daniyal. Here's his story:⠀ ⠀ Daniyal Kashif was the only Muslim in his class in elementary school and one of only a handful of South Asians in his Oshawa high school, R.S. McLaughlin CVI.⠀ ⠀ That’s why he created a multicultural committee at his high school when he was in Grade 10. The committee, which still exists, hosts events throughout the year to celebrate cultures from around the world, such as potlucks and showcases.⠀ ⠀ Daniyal was recently one of only 20 Canadian students to win a TD Scholarship for Community Leadership, worth $70,000. He was the only Pakistani in his cohort of TD scholars.⠀ ⠀ He is now the vice-president of the Pakistani Students’ Association at U of T Scarborough (@psa.utsc).⠀ ⠀ So, what was it like coming to such a diverse campus?⠀ “It was almost like a culture shock, honestly. I’m still living in Oshawa and I drive back and forth and it’s such a vast difference from Scarborough.”⠀ ⠀ “I think it’s really nice the environment at UTSC creates with all the different groups, and I think it’s amazing how everybody coexists, it’s really wonderful.”UofT Instagram photoThe #PrideTO vibes were strong as #UTSC students, staff, faculty and @utsccheerleading marched together in the Toronto #Pride parade.
