As the leaves begin to turn, a colourful and lively palate of arts and cultural events is also being offered for UTSC and our community to enjoy. Arts & Events Programming (AEP), representing the Department of Humanities, is offering a full schedule of events to satisfy your cultural cravings this fall. Scroll down for a listing of upcoming events.
“We’re excited to present such a stimulating and innovative roster of arts events,” said Lynn Tucker, director, Arts & Events Programming at U of T Scarborough. “Arts & Events Programming is working with students, staff and faculty on campus, as well as making connections within our community. All of these events are open to the public and free of charge, so we encourage everyone to take part.”
In addition, the AEP office has recently launched a new web site to showcase the range of dynamic activities happening on campus. For more details, visit www.aeplive.ca. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7 – Literary reading by M.G. Vassanji, 7:30 to 8:00 p.m., AA-112. Vassanji is a renowned Canadian novelist and two-time winner of the Giller Prize. He will be reading from his novel, When She Was Queen (2005).
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13 – Sound Art from Scratch! Snider Visiting Artist Andrew Staniland, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., BV-452. This event follows the previous week’s workshop, introducing electronic music composition, including the use of shareware and freeware software. The workshop is limited to eight Humanities students. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 – Talk by journalist Orly Halpern, 12 noon to 2 p.m., AA160. Halpern, a freelance journalist and Globe and Mail reporter will speak about her experiences as a Jewish-American war correspondent in Israel.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20 – Music Performance Lecture Series: Kiyoshi Nagata and Aki Takahashi playing traditional Japanese music featured in Kabuki Theatre. 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., SW-128.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 – Music and Poetry Performance, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., AA303. This performance, titled “Like Light Off Water” features poet Daphne Marlatt and the Robert Minden Duo.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 – Music Performance Lecture Series: Seka Rat Nadi playing traditional Balinese music . 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., SW-128.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4 – Tung Lin Kok Yuen (TLKY) Public Lecture Series featuring Indian literary and political essayist Pankaj Mishra on “Buddhism and the Intellectual.” 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., AA112.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 – New art exhibition opening, Doris McCarthy Gallery, featuring artist Ellen Moffat. Details to be announced. Visit www.utsc.utoronto.ca/dmg
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 – Film, The Linguists, time TBA, Leigha Lee Browne Theatre.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13 – World Rhythms Performance Series, 6:30 lecture and 7:00 concert, Leigha Lee Browne Theatre. Pre-lecture by CIUT radio’s Ken Stower, host of Global Rhythms, followed by Latin-Spanish music performance. Musicians TBA.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16 to SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21 - Sound Unbound Symposium - Highlights include talks and performances by Katherine McCleod, Gerry Shikatani, Daniel Scott Tysdal, Idle Tigers, J.K. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28 – Sounds of the Season Concerts, AA223. 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. - Strings and Choir; 7 :00 to 9:00 p.m. – Concert Band, Jazz Band and Flute Choir.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30 – Panel discussion on the Tamil-Canadian Protests of spring 2009, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., AA-112. Presented by the Intersections, Exchanges, Encounters program in the Humanities Department.
