Campus Cops Shaving Their Way to a Cure

(Scarborough)
On Tuesday, April 04th, 2006 the University of Toronto Police Service will hold their annual head shave to raise money for cancer research.  This satellite event is one of two being held in Scarborough as part of the Cops for Cancer campaign.
The overall Cops for Cancer fundraising drive began in 1994 when a police officer shaved his head to support a young cancer patient. The officer wanted to show his support to the boy, who was being ridiculed at school because of his hair loss. Other officers joined in and shaved their heads.
Since then police officers have held Cops for Cancer fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society. “Cops” – both men and women – agree to have their heads shaved at a public place such as shopping malls or city hall squares. The police officers gather pledges from co-workers, friends and family.
The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of those living with cancer.  The Canadian Cancer Society achieves its mission through research, education, patient services and advocacy for healthy public policy. These efforts are supported by volunteers and staff and funds raised in communities across Canada through efforts like Cops for Cancer.
Tuesday’s event will take place in the Meeting Place, University of Toronto at Scarborough, 1265 Military Trail, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The second Cops for Cancer Head Shave will take place on May 09th, 2006 in Centre Court at the Scarborough Town Centre.
