Toronto, ON-- The first residence built at theUniversity of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC) since 1992 has been named today in honour of the first female provost at U of T and UTSC’s first female principal – Joan Foley.
Joan Foley Hall is a four-storey building that offers accommodation for 230 students in apartment-style suites. Designed by Baird Sampson Neuert / Montgomery Sisam Associates, it features a glass atrium which will serve as a focal point and meeting space for residents. Three distinct courtyards and ground level covered porches will allow gatherings to extend out of doors, even in rainy weather.
“It is fitting that this new residence, which will do so much for the student experience at UTSC, is named for someone who worked so closely with students in her distinguished career at the University of Toronto,? says Professor David Farrar, vice provost (students). “Joan Foley served in some of the most senior administrative roles in the university, but she never lost sight of one of her primary roles as a professor – that is, to be a good educator.?
Professor Emerita Foley began her teaching career at U of T in psychology in 1963, rising to become UTSC principal from 1976 to 1984. Among her many awards are the City of Scarborough Civic Award of Merit, the U of T Alumni Association Faculty Award and the Arbor Award for outstanding voluntary service to U of T. In 1993 U of T established the Joan E. Foley Quality of Student Experience Award, presented annually to a student, faculty or staff member. Most recently she has played a key role in the development of co-operative programs and continues her commitment as a special adviser on a variety of academic and community programs at the Scarborough campus.
“Joan Foley has been a long-standing proponent of enhancing the student experience on campus, and what better way to honour that commitment than by naming this student residence in her honour,? says Professor John Youson, UTSC interim vice-president and principal.
“It is a very special experience to have a building bear my name,? says Foley. “But this is not just any building – the generations of students that live and work here now and in the future will contribute enormously to the vitality of the campus through their presence. This project is a wonderful development for the whole UTSC community.?
Founded in 1964, UTSC provides undergraduate and graduate studies with a current enrolment of approximately 8,200 students. A new Academic Resource Centre was opened this month and the campus continues to expand to meet projected increases with a new Student Centre, Management Building and Arts Classroom Building currently under construction.
