Gerald McMaster is Curator of Canadian Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario . A member of the Plains Cree/Siksika First Nation, he is one of Canada's best-known aboriginal artists. With a longstanding interest in promoting Native arts and culture, he studied in the US and Canada and then obtained a Doctorate at the University of Amsterdam’s School for Cultural Analysis. From 2000 to 2004, he was deputy assistant director for cultural resources and the director's special assistant for the Smithsonian Institution's Mall exhibitions at the National Museum of the American Indian. He is a member of the Order of Canada, and he was the first aboriginal Canadian Commissioner for the Venice Biennale.
