Gifts Boost Doris McCarthy Gallery Campaign

The Doris McCarthy gallery at the University of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC) is two steps closer to its $1.3 million fundraising goal thanks to two significant gifts announced tonight at Art Angel Investments (Passages Inc.). The gifts will name the gallery welcome station and foyer.

“We were thrilled to receive these special gifts," says Maria Dyck, Associate Principal of Advancement at UTSC. “The McCarthy Gallery will serve as a vital cultural resource for our students, our community, and for everyone interested in Canadian contemporary art."

Donors Alan and Karie Bryce will name the gallery foyer in memory of Karie’s late aunt Virginia (Ginny) Clark, a long-time collector of McCarthy’s work. The Bryce collection is one of the largest private collections of McCarthy paintings.

Mr. Bryce is hosting tonight’s event, which will also recognize Bernadette Yuen, of Toronto, for her significant gift. Yuen’s gift will name the gallery welcome station.

Doris McCarthy, one of Canada’s most respected artists, thanked the donors for their commitment to gallery and the arts community. “UTSC has a special place in my heart," she said.

McCarthy received a Bachelor of Arts from UTSC in 1989. She worked with the Group of Seven and their contemporaries to interpret the Canadian landscape and sites the UTSC’s 300-acre campus as a source of great inspiration.

The Doris McCarthy Gallery is one of five capital projects currently underway at UTSC. The $100 million campus expansion also includes an academic resource centre, 500-seat lecture and performance theatre, residence, and a student centre.
