Toronto – Today the University of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC) celebrated the start of construction on a new building for its Department of Management.
“This is the most significant period of growth at UTSC, since the opening of our campus back in 1964,? said vice-president and principal Paul Thompson. “The Department of Management has been an integral leader at UTSC in developing unique programs. It is very fitting that the department will soon have a dedicated space for its renowned programs.?
Designed by Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects Inc. the $15.5 million building is planned to open in September 2004 and will be funded through both public and private sector support.
“Buildings such as this are only made possible thanks to monies from Ontario SuperBuild, and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities,? said U of T president Robert Birgeneau. “The Government of Ontario is a vital partner in our ongoing development and continued excellence in our academic endeavours.?
“I congratulate everyone involved in making this project a reality,? said the Honourable Dianne Cunningham, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. “Our infrastructure investments through SuperBuild will create a lasting legacy for students in Ontario. Through projects like this, Ontario is leading every other province in Canada in meeting the needs of students, now, and in the future.?
The three-story, 47,000 sq. ft. facility will feature specially designed case rooms, classrooms, study space, offices, and a spectacular atrium that will provide a place for formal lectures and other activities.
“From a student perspective, the new building will be a home for tomorrow's business leaders and graduates of UTSC; an innovatively designed building that stimulates creativity inside and out of the classroom, and enriches our overall learning experience,? said Sejal Shah, president of UTSC’s Management and Economics Students’ Association.
Birgeneau added, “This new building is not only a significant addition for UTSC but for the University of Toronto as a whole. This campus is the centre of cooperative education for the University of Toronto. It is here that University of Toronto offers the prestigious Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Because of this, and other such stellar programs, Scarborough attracts some of the best students across the entire university and we are incredibly proud of this department and its achievements.?
The University of Toronto at Scarborough, which opened in 1964, offers undergraduate and graduate programs and has become the GTA leader in co-op education. UTSC’s $100 million expansion also includes an academic resource centre, 500-seat lecture and performance theatre, residence, a student centre and an art gallery named in honour of celebrated artist and UTSC alumna Doris McCarthy.
