Beginning Sept. 4, first-year students at the University of Toronto will take part in activities ranging from body painting to competitive book tossing in a time-honoured tradition designed to help students bond with their new peers. Orientation events this year include:
St. George Campus (Sept. 5 to Sept. 9):
- University College residence students move in, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- engineering student bed races, King’s College Road, Sept. 8 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
- student club fair and parade, King’s College Circle, Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- concert by Canadian band Sloan to raise awareness of the Make Poverty History campaign, back campus, Sept. 9 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
* King’s College Road is closed to traffic Sept. 9 from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tower Road is closed to traffic Sept. 9 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.
U of T at Scarborough (Sept. 5 to Sept. 10):
- festival games (three-legged races, etc.), Sept. 6 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- The King Has Gone Missing – scavenger-type game, Sept. 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Amazing Race – similar to the popular reality show, teams of students race to 36 locations around the campus, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m
- Shinerama – shoe-shining at various locations in Toronto to raise funds for cystic fibrosis, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
U of T at Mississauga (Sept. 4 to Sept. 10):
- play fair – ice-breaker games, Sept. 7 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- “fun run” organized by student athletic council, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
- student tree-planting, Sept. 8 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- UTM campus race – cross between reality show Amazing Race and a scavenger hunt involving games such as Twister, Sept. 8 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
