SCSU fundraiser to aid hurricane survivors

On January 27, 2006, UTSC will host a fundraising event to benefit survivors of hurricane Katrina. The evening, organized by the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU), will feature displays of modern dance, music, paintings, photography and short films by local artists specific to the theme 'surfacing'.

"Surfacing is intended to represent the surfacing of the ravaged cities from a state of emergency and the surfacing of the human spirit when faced with challenges and disasters," says Fulvio Martinez, executive producer of the event.

Surfacing will be promoted throughout the greater Toronto area with the assistance of participating, external organizations.

"We are getting help from all over the place and as far away as New Orleans itself," says Martinez.

"The New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation has mailed material for us to use during the show."

The fundraiser has also caught the attention of Elle Canada, which will participate as an event sponsor. The national magazine has agreed to sell reduced-price subscriptions at the event and donate half of the proceeds to the Canadian Red Cross.

"We hope to raise $5,000 to assist with the relief efforts," says Martinez.

"Student designers, either independent or from institutions, are invited to participate.  They can showcase the originality and skill of their designs while assisting those in need."
