Senior Seminar in Arts Management Class Publishing Initiative

by Debbie Cheng, Senior Seminar student in Arts Management

Toronto, ON-- Final year students of the Senior Seminar in Arts Management class at the University of Toronto at Scarborough announce the launch of EMERGING: Passionate Viewpoints from Students and Graduates of the Arts Management Programme at the University of Toronto. The publication is the result of combined efforts of the senior students in conjunction with members of Toronto's artistic and cultural community, alumni and faculty of the University of Toronto.

The Senior Seminar in Arts Management (VPAD12) is a course that combines practical co-op work experience and the prior academic studies of Arts Management students. As senior students prepare to enter the world of arts management, this course ensures that students have an advanced knowledge of the scope of issues, trends and challenges facing the arts and cultural community in the twenty-first century.

"Since the Arts Management Programme prepares students for employment in the arts and cultural sector by combining theory with essential practice, the purpose of this publication is to foster the fruition of our accumulated knowledge. For those unfamiliar with this sector, our publication will hopefully pique their interest," says Dora Kong, a student involved in the planning of the publishing initiative.

The publication is a collection of works that reflect the passionate viewpoints of emerging arts managers in the cultural sector in Canada. This book will present both opinions and research on a wide range of issues that are relevant to a new generation of arts personnel.

The official launch of the publication took place on Monday, November 17, 2003 over breakfast at TheatreBooks. Students of the Senior Seminar class officially presented the book to the general public by distributing copies to those in attendance.

“This book was a challenge from the beginning, but I am extremely proud of the outcome. I was thrilled to work with such a talented group of students, and am impressed with the professionalism, resourcefulness and high caliber work of everyone involved. This was a great learning experience and I am proud to be a part of it," says Lauren Wilkie, one of the book's authors.

This publication is not available for sale but copies will be circulated to numerous public libraries, universities and artistic and cultural organizations across Canada for education purposes.

The official UTSC launch of EMERGING: Passionate Viewpoints from Students and Graduates of the Arts management Programme at the University of Toronto will take place on Thursday, November 27 at 11:00 a.m., with the reception and remarks at 12:00 p.m. in the reception area of the ARC. The publication will be presented to the Academic Resource Centre, UTSC faculty and students. Copies of the book will be available at this event.
