What could be more innocent than a chocolate bar? The real story behind this favorite treat is much more sinister than most could imagine. At this year’s Snider Lecture at U of T Scarborough, renowned Canadian writer and journalist Carol Off speaks on the topic of “The Dark Side of Chocolate”. She follows the cocoa bean on its voyage from rural Africa to your local candy counter and examines child slavery, ethnic cleansing, and multinational cocoa cartels. You’ll never look at chocolate the same way again.
Carol Off is the author of Bitter Chocolate: The Dark Side of the World’s Most Seductive Sweet. She has also published bestselling books on Canada’s military adventures in peacekeeping and her documentaries for CBC Television have won numerous awards. She is currently the host of CBC Radio’s As It Happens.
The annual Snider Lecture was established in honour of Fletcher C. snider, a distinguished lawyer and U of T graduate. The lecture will take place on Monday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the new Science Research Building (SY-110) on the U of T Scarborough campus. The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
