Toronto - Nearly 1,200 people gathered at the University of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC) on Friday, Aug. 6, for the third-annual SummerFest outdoor movie night.
“It’s about community,? says Maria Dyck, Associate Principal, Advancement, at UTSC. “This year we’re celebrating our fortieth anniversary. SummerFest is just one of the ways we can invite our neighbours to the campus to celebrate our community and thank them for making UTSC great. The event just gets bigger and better each year and we love doing it.?
Under a starlit sky, members of the Scarborough community and others from across the city came together to enjoy a barbecue, music, family fun, and two movies on the big screen: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, starring Scarborough’s own Mike Myers, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
UTSC thanks Enbridge, Orderline, The Scarborough Mirror and TDMeloche Monnex for supporting the event.
Other participants included Shinerama, Storefront and community volunteers, Aramark, Passionate Art, Stand UP Scarborough, Toronto Police Service, Toronto Fire Fighters Association, and the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union.
SummerFest is a signature event of Stand UP Scarborough, a campaign celebrating the great people, places, and things-to-do in Scarborough. More than 60 community organizations are currently involved in Stand UP including UTSC, which is a founding member and campaign sponsor.
Opened in 1964, UTSC provides undergraduate and graduate studies for more than 8,000 students and has become the GTA leader in co-op education. Through partnerships, teaching, and research, UTSC continually distinguishes itself as an innovative leader in the U of T tri-campus community. The campus is currently undergoing the largest expansion in its 40-year history.
