U of T chosen one of top employers in Canada for second year

For the second consecutive year, the University of Toronto has been named one of the top 100 employers in Canada.
The list, which is compiled by Mediacorp Canada Inc., chooses organizations based on factors such as physical and social environment, health benefits, vacation time, training and career development, and community involvement.
“We’re extremely pleased that the University is again considered one of the top employers in the country,” said Angela Hildyard, vice-president (human resources and equity). “The University realizes that part of guaranteeing an excellent student experience is to ensure that we have the best staff and faculty available. One way to achieve that is by offering a satisfying work environment.”
The University was also listed as one of the top 50 employers in the Greater Toronto Area.
Hildyard points out that although gratifying, the top employer ranking is based on policy. It does not take into account employee perception of the workplace, something she believes will be rectified with the Speaking UP employee experience survey which launched on Oct. 10.
“Speaking UP is designed to fill in the gaps concerning what we know about what employees like and would like to improve about working here. The results will help to guide future policy and program development,” she said.
Over 1,500 employers from across Canada submitted applications to be on the 2007 list. The top 100 organizations vary in size, scope and field of expertise, and are not given a numerical ranking in the list. Canada’s Top 100 Employers will be featured in the Oct. 13 issue of Maclean’s magazine, and the Top 50 Employers in the GTA will be in the Toronto Star on Oct. 14.
