An increasing number of individuals are becoming more health conscious. The option of healthier alternatives is becoming increasingly available as can be seen with restaurants going from white breads to whole wheat. The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) also wants to be involved in the encouraging students to have a healthier lifestyle and make healthier choices. On the 22nd of October, the Nutritional Health Peer Program will be hosting an Eat Smart Celebration Fair to promote healthy eating.

What is Eat Smart?

Eat Smart is Ontario's Healthy Restaurant and Cafeteria Program. Toronto Public Health participates in this exclusive program with the Canadian Cancer Society (Ontario Division) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, as provincial partners.

Restaurants and cafeterias that are "Eat Smart!" certified offer:

  • A variety of healthier food choices, on the menu and an Eat Smart! special of the day
  • exceptional standards in food safety including kitchen staff certified in safe food handling by Public Health
  • 100% smoke-free seating

On Thursday October 22nd, the 2009 Eat Smart! Award of Excellence presentation will take place to celebrate the concerted effort and commitment of the Food Service Director of Aramark, Homer Jung for our H-Wing cafeteria, The Market Place.  The Market Place now meets the Eat Smart! dietary requirements to offer the campus nutritionally healthier alternatives.
