Breaking a camera, getting kicked out of a mall while making a music video for an event are just a few of the fond memories Joseph Flett has of his time in Residence.
Flett’s time in Residence was mostly spent at the Residence Centre where he often spent time with friends either playing pool or studying.
He also says his most rewarding accomplishment at U of T Scarborough was being hired as a member of the Residence Life Team.
“It allowed me to achieve many other important accomplishments both personally and as a team,” he says.
His memories are not limited to living on campus, he recalls taking a philosophy course, PHLB99: Writing for Philosophy, that he calls his favorite class at U of T Scarborough.
“On paper, it may sound like a banal class, but it was actually very interesting, funny, and super helpful in improving my writing skills across disciplines,” Flett says.
Flett majored in Mental Health Studies and Philosophy as he is interested in abnormal psychology and philosophy, which he says is an “excellent and growing department” at UTSC.
Flett next step is taking a break from school for a year, but after his break, he hopes to continue his studies in psychology.
Where did you go to high school?
I attended R.S. McLaughlin C.V.I in Oshawa.
What’s the best-kept secret on campus?
There is a greenhouse on the roof of the science wing. Accessing it is pretty difficult unless you know exactly where you’re going. If you do find it, you may be surprised by its limited open hours.
Where do you feel most at home on campus?
The Residence Centre! Residence was my home for three semesters, and the Rez Centre was central for hang-outs, studying, and Residence events. If you were lonely or bored in your dorm, you could usually find a friendly face to chill with there.
What would you like the world to know about you?
I love architecture and urban planning – I frequently read about it in my spare time, and have written two articles on it in our campus’ student publication ‘The Underground’. This ties into my other interest of municipal politics, which greatly affects municipal planning.
What made you want to become a part of the Residence Life Team?
I started getting more involved in Residence in my second year and recognized that my positive Residence experience was facilitated by an awesome Residence Life Team. Thus, I wanted to join the team and did so for my third and final year of Residence.
What is your favorite memory of Residence?
My favourite memory was making a music video with my Foley Hall floor-mates as part of a Rez Cup event. We were instructed to make a shot-for-shot remake of a music video, and chose to do Sara Bareilles’ “Brave.” We went all out to make it happen – we broke a camera and even got kicked out of Scarborough Town Centre, but it turned out great.
What was your most rewarding accomplishment during your time here?
I would say it was being hired as a member of the Residence Life Team. Whether it was organizing a successful mix-and-mingle, or making meaningful connections with students, being in the RLT facilitated many rewarding endeavours.
