Toronto – Nearly 600 people gathered at the University of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC) on Saturday, August 16, 2003 for the annual outdoor movie night "Summerfest". Originally scheduled for Friday, the event was scaled-down and postponed by one day due to the unprecedented blackout.
Under a starlit sky, members of the Scarborough community and others from across the city came together to enjoy a barbecue and the movies Shrek and Wayne's World on the big screen.
"It was a really great night," says Maria Dyck, Associate Principal, Advancement at UTSC, "The blackout was a stressful experience for everyone. This was a wonderful way for people to get out of the house, be outdoors, and enjoy some good entertainment featuring Scarborough native, Mike Myers."
Also screened were special video messages by hometown heroes the Barenaked Ladies and Paul Tracy. The celebrities sent their greetings, shared their memories of growing up in Scarborough, and thanked Toronto healthcare workers for their hard work during the SARS crisis.
The campus hosted UTSC Summerfest as part of its community building initiative "Stand UP Scarborough". UTSC is partnering with local organizations and business leaders to celebrate Scarborough and the many wonderful aspects of its culture and community.
