UTSC responds to the Haitian Earthquake

The University of Toronto Scarborough community, through a number of initiatives, is expressing its solidarity and support for the people of Haiti who are enduring a great loss of life and suffering as a result of the devastating earthquake of January 12th.

  • Personal counselling is available through our Health & Wellness Centre, located on the second floor of the Student Centre in Room SL270.  Call 416-287-7065 for more information.
  • On Tuesday, January 26, a vigil, organized in part by the Scarborough Campus Students Union (SCSU), will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in Rex’s Den on the Lower Level of the Student Centre.
  • Our campus celebration of International Development & Culture Week during the week of February 8-12 is all the more poignant given Haiti's longstanding need for development support. Event organizers intend to incorporate aspects of Haiti into the program. A Facebook group has been created for the event: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=280661637958
  • Many in our community are seeking ways to contribute financial support to relief efforts.  Through our International Development Studies co-op office, we have long-standing relationships with organizations who have a direct role in relief efforts.  They are:

Oxfam-Quebec - http://oxfam.qc.ca/en/home
Canadian Feed the Children - http://www.canadianfeedthechildren.ca/
CARE Canada- http://care.ca/main/index.php?en&_home
WUSC - www.wusc.ca
World Vision - www.worldvision.ca
Presbyterian World Service & Development - http://www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd/appeals

Members of the UTSC community are encouraged to donate directly to these organizations.  We have a long history of demonstrated support and care for those in need near and far.  This strong and empathic show of support for the people of Haiti is testament to the values we hold dear.
Sincerely,
