Martial artists, lion dancers and students alike gathered on Thursday, Feb 15. at the U of T Scarborough Meeting Place to ring in the Lunar New Year.

Observed across China, the Korean peninsula, and to a lesser extent in Japan, the Lunar New Year celebrates the closure of one year in the Chinese zodiac and the start of the next. Friday, Feb. 16 marked the end of the year of the rooster and the beginning of the year of the dog.

Students and professors at the Scarborough campus celebrated by passing out traditional red pockets filled with chocolate coins, organizers from the International Student Centre also served spring rolls and dumplings. Instructors from the Sunny Tang Martial Arts Centre dazzled the crowd with wing chun and tai chi demonstrations that culminated with a performance by two lion dancers.
