While many major films and TV shows shoot on a closed soundstage, some productions venture out into the real world to create the magic on the big and small screen.

From science fiction to action to holiday and horror, Scarborough landmarks and extraordinary landscapes are featured in every genre of film and TV. In his latest Intervals: The Principal's Blog, Principal Bruce Kidd shares locations to visit in Scarborough, including U of T Scarborough, to see where notable films and TV shows have been filmed.

For now, it's Scarborough insiders who Kidd says are "in the loop" to filming in and around the region, but he also notes there can be a viral effect in films profiling a location in a unique way.

"'Movie-induced tourism,' is a thing, and can be great for local economies," says Kidd. "For really popular films the tourism spike can last as long as three or four years."

The Shape of Water, directed by Guillermo del Toro, is 2017's most decorated film. Several scenes in the multi-Oscar and BAFTA nominated film were shot at U of T Scarborough.

"You could say U of T Scarborough plays a supporting role," says Kidd. "Many scenes were filmed on our campus: the OCCAM bus stop is the main entrance to the Science Wing; a corridor in the Humanities Wing is both the lunch room and the hall where OCCAM employees punch the clock and action at our loading dock will have you on the edge of your seat."
