Biography

Professor Michael Souza is a cognitive neuroscientist by training, having earned his B.A. (2005) and M.A. (2007) in Psychology at UC Davis and his Ph.D. in Psychology at UC Berkeley (2010). He moved to Vancouver to join UBC Psychology as an Assistant Professor of Teaching in 2010 and during his time at UBC, he won multiple awards for his teaching, service, and educational leadership (e.g., Killam Teaching Prize in 2012/13). In 2016, Prof. Souza moved to Toronto to join UTSC Psychology as an Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) of Psychology and Neuroscience. He has taught a number of existing courses anchored in cognitive neuroscience, and has also created several new courses (e.g., PSYC50PSYC70PSYD59).

 As Acting Associate Chair Undergraduate Programs & Curriculum (ADUPC), he shepherded critical curricular work for the department, including strengthening prerequisite structures, updating and fortifying program learning outcomes, and renewing the Neuroscience programs. 

The ADUPC works closely with the Vice-Dean Teaching, Learning & Undergraduate Programs in the following key areas of responsibility, with an Inclusive Excellence lens: Curriculum Innovation and Renewal, including attention to Indigenous experiences and knowledge systems; Black and racialized knowledges and experiences; experiences of other historically and systemically marginalized communities; and international and intercultural perspectives; New Undergraduate Programs; Special Programs (Combined, Dual, Double, (Con)Joint Degree and Certificate Programs • Major and Minor Modifications of Undergraduate Programs; • Unit and Program Reviews (quality assessment of programs and courses).
