This November, the University will host a celebration of the artistic legacy left by UTSC alumna Doris McCarthy (CM, OO, LLD, RCA, OS.A, CSPWC), timed to coincide with the first anniversary of the artist’s passing.
McCarthy, a prolific artist throughout her century-long life, left the university a collection of more than 200 works of art and extensive archives. The works range from her first watercolour, painted when she was 14, to her last canvas, undertaken at the age of 96. The journals, documents, slides, photographs and albums—including several from her childhood, spent in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto—and other significant objects provide insights into her artistic vision and philosophy. With this collection, the Doris McCarthy Gallery becomes Canada’s leading research centre for her work, as well as an important resource for scholars and students alike.
Staff at the gallery will offer curatorial expertise for the preservation and exhibition of the artwork, while those at the UTSC Library will provide critical knowledge for the care and preservation of the archival material.
