Centre for the Neurobiology of Stress (CNS)

The Centre for the Neurobiology of Stress (CNS) is a state-of-the-art infrastructure facility founded in 2000 with an initial major award from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation that was matched by funds from the Ontario Research Fund as well as significant funding from UTSC. A second award from these organizations in 2009 for new instrumentation and renovations brought the total award to $10 million. The facility brings together researchers from the departments of Biological Sciences, Physical and Environmental Sciences, and Psychology at UTSC as well as local, national, and international collaborators. The CNS is comprised of several facilities including an advanced electrophysiology and microscopy facility, animal behavioural testing and surgical facilities, cellular and molecular biology suites, and an arctic field research station.

The objective of the CNS is to provide:

  • State-of-the-art equipment infrastructure essential for the integrated application of cutting edge molecular, cellular, and neurophysiological techniques.
  • A stimulating and technologically sophisticated environment for the training of undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Opportunities for the development of in-house local, national, and international research collaborative projects.
