Management Community Service Leadership Award: Marshall Chamberlain

Maegan Ong

Congratulations to Marshall (UTSC BBA 2018, Rotman MBA 2023, U of T JD 2023), recipient of the Management Community Service Leadership Award for his contributions to the University of Toronto Scarborough in 2023.

A frequent presence on campus, Marshall engages with current and future Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students as a mentor, keynote speaker, and interviewer. Since graduating from the Management and International Business (MIB) program in 2018, he has earned not only an MBA from the Rotman School of Management but also a JD from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Today, Marshall works in corporate law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

We sat down with Marshall to learn more about his U of T journey.

As an alumnus, why is it important to you to play an active role in the U of T Scarborough Management community?

I benefited tremendously from the Management and Economics faculty, staff and alumni who were willing to give me their time and offer support/guidance when I was in school. As such, I am more than happy to offer whatever I can back to the UTSC community, in my attempt to pay it forward.

Earliest memory of being on campus?

It was Fall Campus Day in 2013. I distinctly remember meeting the MIB program coordinator, Nicole, as well as a number of faculty members and current students who made me feel welcome and showed me that the UTSC Management program would give me tremendous opportunities to learn and grow.

What competitive advantage did you derive from the Management and International Business (MIB) program?

I’m grateful to the MIB programs for the many opportunities I was afforded. Getting to work abroad in Germany, and study at the University of Edinburgh, helped shape my understanding of international and cross-border business, which I apply every day. Additionally, I appreciate the opportunities in the program to learn from tremendous faculty and get to be involved on campus, including as a part of the many student groups or in academic roles such as TA-ships. Overall, I think the wide breadth of experiences that I had in the Management program have helped me launch my career.
