“Managing co-op students is a uniquely rewarding experience.”

– Nick Schoenhoff, Senior Manager, Innovation Strategy, RBC

Congratulations to Nick, recipient of the Student Choice Award for his contributions as a Management Co-op employer and supervisor in 2023.

A valued partner of U of T Scarborough co-op programs, Nick Schoenhoff was named the Student Choice Award winner after being nominated by Nic Penko, Co-op Management and International Business (BBA) candidate, who reported to Nick during his co-op work term as a Business Analyst Intern at RBC.

Nic recalls feeling empowered when he launched his first project under Nick’s supervision: developing a Tableau dashboard with insights to drive tech modernization.

“Nick treats co-op students as full-fledged members of his team and integrates them into all aspects of his work. From day one, Nick taught me so much about storytelling, balanced presentations, and determining what information is key to share. The skills that I learned throughout this project are transferrable to many aspects of my life and will greatly benefit me in the future,” said Nic.

“What makes Nick a remarkable manager is his openness to exploration. Not only will he encourage me to propose new ideas in projects, but he also urges me to explore the organization outside of the work we do.”

Nick describes the opportunity to mentor phenomenal students like Nic as highly rewarding, both professionally and personally.

“Managing co-op students is a uniquely rewarding experience, particularly when they take the initiative to maximize what they can get out of the term. Nic’s abundance of enthusiasm, curiosity and ability to quickly learn new skills was what made his term such a success,” said Nick.

“Not only did Nic grow professionally through his placement, but he produced work that made a real impact in our team which was inspiring to see as his manager.”

Way to go, Nic and Nick!
