Economics

MGEC25H3 - Special Topics in Economics: Urban and Real Estate Economics (Winter 2024)

This course covers special topics in an area of economics. The specific topics will vary from year to year. It will provide students with an opportunity to explore a range of topics through the application of different economic methodologies and analyses. Also, it will highlight current faculty research expertise, and will also allow faculty to present material not covered in our existing course offerings in greater detail.

Prerequisite: MGEB02H3 and MGEB06H3

MGEC26H3 - Special Topics in Economics: The Economics of Sports (Fall 2023)

This third-year course examines the economics of professional and collegiate athletics, introducing the idea of sports teams as economic firms and of professional athletes as productive workers. It begins by introducing the concepts of demand and supply of professional team sports and continues by studying the market structures and economic strategies employed by professional teams and athletes. Topics to be covered include the incentives of sports team owners, the statistical evaluation of players, strikes and lockouts, salary determination, unions and collective bargaining agreements, the structure of leagues, drafts, stadium construction, and the economic distinction between professional and amateur sports.

Finance

MGFC45H3 - Portfolio Management: Theory and Practice (Winter 2024)

*This course can be used to fulfill 0.5 finance requirement.*

This course introduces students to both the theoretical and practical elements of portfolio management. On the theoretical side, students learn the investment theories and analytic models applicable to portfolio management. Students gain fundamental knowledge of portfolio construction, optimization, and performance attribution. The hands-on component of the course aims to provide students with a unique experiential learning opportunity, through participation in the different stages of the portfolio management process. The investment exercises challenge students to apply and adapt to different risk and return scenarios, time horizons, legal and other unique investment constraints. Classes are conducted in the experiential learning lab, where students explore academic, research and practical components of Portfolio Management.

MGTC28H3 - Computer Programming Applications for Business (Winter 2024)

This is an introductory coding course for Management students who have little programming experience. Beginning with the introduction to the fundamentals of computer scripting languages, students will then learn about the popular tools and libraries often used in various business areas. The case studies used in the course prepare students for some Management specializations that require a certain level of computer programming skills. Students are expected to know introductory algebra, calculus, and statistics to apply coding solutions to these business cases successfully.

Strategy

MGSB01H3 - Introduction to Strategy (Winter 2024)

*This course can be used to fulfill the 0.5 strategy requirement.*

This course offers an introduction to strategic management. It analyzes strategic interactions between rival firms in the product market, provides conceptual tools for analyzing these interactions, and highlights the applications of these tools to key elements of business strategy. The course then moves beyond product market competition and considers (among other things) strategic interactions inside the organization, and with non-market actors.

MGSD91H3 - Special Topics in Strategy (Fall 2023)

This is an advanced course tackling key issues in technology strategy in the digital era. We focus on the theory and application of platform, screening, and AI strategies. Students should have foundational knowledge in strategy and industrial organization. On top of that, this course dives into the impact of network effect, information asymmetry, moral hazard, and artificial intelligence on business strategy and industry dynamics. Students will be exposed to a combination of foundational scholarly articles and business cases. The course is designed to train students’ ability to grasp “big” abstract ideas grounded in social science and to apply them appropriately in complex real-world business scenarios.
