Join us as we celebrate the historic unveiling of the UTSC's first community-engaged art installation celebrating Black Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto Scarborough. In celebration of U of T’s partnership with Nobellum to support the founding of 100 Black-owned businesses in STEM, this event seeks to bring together the voices of our communities to action our shared commitment to inclusion, anti-racism, and anti-Black racism as reflected in academic learning spaces in the fields of finance, STEM and entrepreneurship. Suggested attire is dressy!

Arts Entrepreneurship + You: Mapping Your Journeys

Join award-winning multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of the Scarbrite Collective, Sylvie Stojanovski, in learning the basics of arts entrepreneurship.

Using traditional strategic planning tools like the Business Model Canvas, and S.W.O.T. analysis in combination with arts-based self-study methods like reflexive writing and drawing, you’ll learn how to identify your aspirations and develop them into an action map.

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

2023 CFA Program Student Scholarships

The UTSC Management Department offers three scholarships for students taking the upcoming 2023 CFA exams.

The scholarship waives the one-time CFA Program enrolment fee and reduces the exam registration fee (includes access to the curriculum eBook) to USD $350.

We encourage students who wish to write the CFA level 1 exam to apply. Even if you are not selected for the scholarship, you will get the offer to register Aug 2022 exam with the 'early bird' fee.

Application Requirements:

Must be currently registered UTSC MGMT student
Have NOT already registered for an upcoming CFA Exam
Must have completed at least 10 course credits at the time of application

World Cup Data League Challenge

With data analytics becoming an increasingly valuable skill in demand in the modern workplace, MTA in collaboration with The BRIDGE is proud to host a Fifa World Cup ⚽️ 🏆themed Data analytics Event📣📣📣.

The series will consist of 3 workshops including:

‘Introduction to Sports Analytics📊’,
’Python, CSV, API💻’ and
‘Data visualization (utilizing PowerBI)📈’ taught by professionals coupled with a case competition🏅 allowing students to showcase what they learnt.

Finding a cofounder is one of the hardest parts of starting a company, and one of the keys to a startup’s success. Join student founder-in-residence Albert Tai of Hypercare as he explores this topic with a fellow VC-backed founder. They’ll talk about how and why it is important to find someone who complements your skill set and personality and who shares your vision and commitment. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students gain real-world experience as they assume the role of a research analyst and are tested on their ability to value a stock, write an initiation-of-coverage report, and present their recommendations.

9th Annual UTSC Trading Competition 2022

The BRIDGE & Investment Society are pleased to welcome you to our 9th annual UTSC Trading Competition!

In our state-of-the art lab, UTSC student traders compete in teams to experience life on the trading floor. Using Rotman Interactive Trader software, students learn how to trade financial securities with each other on a real-time basis, and how to quickly apply their knowledge of finance principles in a fast-paced, simulated trade floor experience.

A networking session & awards reception follows, where students connect with finance professionals and alumni.

This workshop serves as an introduction and toolbox for digital storytelling. Discover the elements of digital storytelling and evaluate tools for the various processes of storyboarding, narration and editing. Please note, this workshop is required to advance in the competition.

The Moccasin Project

Come join the Moccasin Project as part of Reconciliation Week at UTSC.

Meet our local Indigenous community partner and learn about TRC Calls to Action. Participants will be making moccasins for children in care, while learning about racism towards Indigenous Peoples/families and the devastating realities of Indigenous child apprehension rates in Canada. Take action today, by helping create awareness and positive change.

Market Research Orientation for Startups

This brief orientation covers the key market research databases and other tools available to U of T startups via U of T Libraries. These secondary market research tools can assist startups in business planning and market sizing, as well as completing business model canvases and other milestones. This session is most appropriate for startups who are already working on an idea.

Participant will:

Familiarize themselves with the core research tools and databases available for market research
Understand how to access e-resources from off-campus
Learn about other workshops and services the library provides for campus entrepreneurs

Preparing a business pitch and developing a business idea requires you to have data on your target market. You need data to inform decisions on your business plan, data on your competitors, and if you want to be innovative in your industry you need data to tell you a story on performance and opportunity. Data literacy for entrepreneurs is essential. This session will help you identify your data needs, find relevant data using specialized library resources, and evaluate and synthesize data using critical thinking.

Launching the Nobellum Innovator Program

You are invited to join us on February 26th for the announcement of the Nobellum Innovator Program, University of Toronto chapter.

At the event, we will hear from the Principal of U of T Scarborough, Wisdom Tettey, Founder of Nobellum, Melisa Ellis, the Nobellum team and key UofT partners. Together, they will highlight how their partnership will support the start up of at least 100 Black owned businesses in STEM by 2025.

Industry Research for Startups

Whether you are on the edge of a new industry to looking to enter an established sector, you need to quantify and understand the industry players, segments, and size. This workshop introduces you to existing sources of industry information such as market research reports and trade journals, as well as provides strategies to help you do your own analysis and estimations.

In this session you will:

Become familiar proprietary and open sources of industry information
Learn to read a market research report in five minutes
Explore models for DIY industry analysis
Take away tools and frameworks for synthesizing and analyzing your industry

Introduction to Coding for Management Students

Facilitators:

This workshop introduces Management students to the fundamentals of coding. Students will learn the importance of coding skills and their applications in business environments. Students will learn the basics of different coding languages (R/Python) and how to get started in learning them at their own pace.

The instructor will also demonstrate coding for data analytics and data visualization. This workshop is intended for UTSC Management students with very little or no prior knowledge of coding.

Becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst Part 1: What is CFA and why should you sit for the CFA exams Online

This session will occur online and is facilitated by the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. It is part of the "Becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst" series.

This workshop aims to demystify the CFA program, giving you unbiased information about the prestigious designation and the exams so you can decide whether you should sit for the exams before you graduate.

Becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst Part 2: Mastering the financial calculator BA-II plus

This session will occur online and is facilitated by the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. It is part of the "Becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst" series.

All finance and accounting students should only be using the BA-II plus financial calculator. The BA-II plus is also the officially approved calculator for professional exams such as the CFA, CPA and FRM. This workshop will cover all the basics plus tips and tricks to increase your efficiency with the calculator.

The BRIDGE Talks Innovation: Hilary Foster, Amazon Educate

Join The BRIDGE for a new regular occurring series of webinars to address special topics at the forefront of business and technology. It is at this intersection where new trends emerge and innovation is fostered.

The first of this series will cover Amazon’s Culture of Innovation and how their Amazon Web Service tools help support that concept in many aspects of their business. The discussion will also feature Professor Bill McConkey who will present the latest academic theories on Innovation. Amazon will also share some exciting tools and curriculum that are made available through their Amazon Educate platform that students can access at The BRIDGE.

Equity, Diversity and Discrimination in the Workplace

Phani Radhakrishnan will be facilitating Equity, Diversity and Discrimination in the Workplace at the BRIDGE Library on February 12th.

How can we build respectful and inclusive communities in the workplace? This session provides an introduction to equity as it relates to hiring practices and compensation. Learn how greater self-awareness contributes to a better understanding of the experiences of those around you, including colleagues and new recruits. Understand why managing diversity if crucial to workplace success and the health of a company, and how you can empower Indigenous peoples and other marginalized peoples such as racialized staff, women and others.

Interested in Arts Entrepreneurship? Don’t know where to begin?

Join artist, creative facilitator, and community organizer, Sylvie Stojanovski in learning the basics of arts-entrepreneurship—what it is, why it matters, and how YOU can take your creative business ideas to the next level. In this workshop, you’ll discover resources to support your evolving career identities, learn how to use visual metaphors to gain a deeper understanding of your artistic journey (thus far), and explore how free-writing can be used as a goal-setting tool to co-create a collective manifesto.

In this workshop, students will learn how to situate yourselves within the field of arts entrepreneurship. Through a reflexive writing and self-cartography exercises, you will cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and gain insight into the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that motivate your journeys as emerging arts professionals.

Data Analytics (Python) Workshop

Students will participate in a workshop, led by Bill Chau, to learn how to use python to analyze data. Students will be asked to make 10 predictions about the outcome of the Raptors game using their data analytics skills.

Raptors v. Knicks

Game time! We will watch the game on the big screens in the lab and see if your predictions came true. Prizes will be awarded for the students with the most accurate predictions.

Food will be served.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills from students in other disciplines, as well as U of T and industry mentors, including Olympian and founder of the Believe Initiative Sarah Wells.

Breaking into Bay Street

Partnering with the CVCA (Canada's Venture Capital & Private Equity Association), “Breaking into Bay Street” will be held on November 22st, 5:30-8:30 pm. The event will be split up into 3 components; a Workshop, an interactive activity, and finally a networking/Q&A session.

The workshop will cover topics such as an overview of a Private Equity firm, the job of an Investment Associate and an Intern Analyst and steps a junior student should take to enter the industry. The interactive activity will be constructing a simple LBO model in Excel, followed by an analysis of returns and multiples. The session will end with an open Q&A. Dinner will be provided!

The goal of this event would be to increase the awareness of Private Equity amongst UTSC students with the partnership of CVCA, provide a pathway for students to start their journeys into Private Equity and Venture Capital.

Data Literacy Workshop: Sports data and the mystery of the MVP

The workshop will be held coincide with the Raptor’s season opener, Oct 17 against the Cavs. Prior to the game, our data librarian will cover topics on data, data collections and data interpretations etc. The Raptors home opening game will be broadcasted on the new 4k screens in our business lab.
